We claim to be Indians by heart, the proud ones, not the boasting types. So we were roaming around the country looking for justification of our claims. We explored nothing new, but for us, the experience was the real discovery. Between the thresholds of natural and synthetic, we explored a huge spectrum of real Indian karigari, which had already existed there for eternity. Those shilpkars (craftsmen/artisans) created some real beauty then and there with such precision and rawness. It may sound like an oxymoron, but believe it or not, the fusion we experienced was inexpressible.
We saw the beauty of their art but felt ashamed when we saw their lives. Keeping luxury aside, they were hustling a lot, even for the bread. Their kids were sitting there, malnourished and bare-bodied. We felt privileged enough to think of the idea of THE SHILP COMPANY then and there.
TSC was founded as a social enterprise to assist Shilpkars in turning their art into a craft and receiving the recognition they deserve. We don’t claim to be a saint, but we do claim to create a sustainable ecosystem for our shilpkars and our facilitators.
We specialise in high-quality crafts and currently offer terracotta, ceramics, black pottery, wood crafts, metal crafts, and stone crafts. We intend to broaden our offering by including authentic handmade apparel, bags, soft furnishings, and traditional Indian footwear.
